Sheriff's Department pays ransom money to hacker...

The Carroll County Sheriff's Office paid the equivalent of $2,400 in ransom money to hackers, the county announced at a press conference Monday afternoon.

The office's computers were infected by ransomware, which prevented users from accessing files in the system.

The sheriff's office paid the ransom to the hackers in the form of Bitcoin, a popular "virtual currency."

The files in question were all decrypted after the ransom was paid, the sheriff's office said.
